“The university has supported me both as an athlete and as a student.
SIU coaches like to win,
but academics is their #1 priority, which is why the new academic/training facility is so important. I don’t just think, I know that my SIU education was a quality one. Southern has played a big part in my life.”

Opportunity Through Excellence: PLACES

Southern Illinois University Carbondale saw its most dramatic period of growth during the late 40s, 50s, and 60s, when the number of students, programs, and facilities increased several-fold. We once had eight academic buildings; we now have over 400. Most, however, are nearly a half-century old and need repair and renovation to bring them to modern standards. Technology also has dramatically changed. It has become an invaluable part of the classroom in virtually every academic discipline and a critical component in modern research.

Opportunity Through Excellence will provide funding to update campus buildings, accommodate new programs, and continue to be at the forefront of technology. A generous gift has allowed us, for example, to begin building a new academic/training center for student athletes. We are also adding to and upgrading Morris Library, the technological hub of campus. Several other projects slated for the future include a Transportation Education Center, an Art and Design building, and renovations and/or additions to the Communications Building, Neckers Hall, and the Agriculture Building.

To be one of the top 75 research institutions in the nation by 2019, we must relentlessly work to enhance the places where our students and faculty study, conduct research, work, and live. The opportunities we provide as part of our mission must be exceptional. Private support through Opportunity Through Excellence will ensure an exemplary campus for years to come.
