College of Education and Human Services
People. Programs. Places.
The College of Education and Human Services prepares not only teachers and administrators for the public schools, but also professionals for a wide array of careers in such areas as athletic training, behavior analysis and therapy, communication disorders and sciences, counselor education, educational measurement and statistics, public health, recreation administration, therapeutic recreation, rehabilitation services, and workforce development. The College offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

In 2019 the College will celebrate 150 years of service to the people of Illinois. The College is proud of its talented and dedicated faculty and students as well as its more than 60,000 alumni across the state, nation, and world.

Support for the College of Education and Human Services
The escalating competition to recruit and retain promising students and exceptional professors demands that we develop and increase funds for endowments and fellowships and that we assure that our programs are responsive to a changing world. Dwindling state funding for higher education underscores the urgency. For the College to address current educational needs and to prepare for succeeding generations of students and faculty, we must achieve additional financial support in several priority categories.

As part of the Opportunity Through Excellence Campaign for Southern, an unprecedented $100 million effort through the SIU Foundation, the University’s comprehensive campaign, the College of Education and Human Services seeks to raise $4 million for the following purposes:

Commitment to Academic Excellence
$l million

The College seeks to develop a Center for Rural Schools and Communities, a research and field-based center for providing school improvement and community development services. In addition, the College seeks to raise funds to advance the student experience by providing additional visiting professorship opportunities in fields such as teacher education, educational leadership, communication disorders and sciences, workforce training and development, counselor education, diversity dynamics, educational measurement and statistics, community and public health, autism spectrum disorders, social work, and kinesiology, among others. Visiting professors would offer unique opportunities for students to interact with leaders in their respective fields.

The College is also working to enhance educational opportunities for at-risk southern Illinois elementary students through expansion of the highly successful Saluki Kids’ Academy.

Commitment to Faculty Excellence
$l million

Enhanced professorships are critical in attracting and retaining outstanding educators. Enhanced professorships would support faculty research and professional travel and increase the opportunity for collaborations and partnerships.

Commitment to Student Excellence
$l.5 million

The College seeks to further its commitment to student excellence by adding targeted scholarships that will attract and retain outstanding undergraduate students and provide for undergraduate research mentorships. Graduate fellowships are needed to recruit nationally and to retain outstanding graduate students for doctoral study toward the Ph.D. in Education with specializations in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, Educational Psychology, Health Education, Workforce Education and Development, and the Ph.D. in Rehabilitation. Master’s degree programs are offered in all departments and specializations including the Master of Social Work and the Master of Public Health.

Commitment to Excellence in Technology and Facilities
$500,000

Additional support is necessary to fund upgrades in essential technology, early childhood training facilities, and the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders.
