Student Affairs and Enrollment Management
People. Programs. Places.
The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management is charged with the complex mission of meeting the needs of entering and continuing students. We support the academic community with services focused on the well-being of the whole student and contributing to students’ opportunities for participation, leadership, and access to services.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is much more than a place to take classes and earn a degree. It is a community that is expected to provide a myriad of important services. The quality of the university experience is shaped in large part by what students do beyond the classroom. The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management works to make their experiences safe, fun, healthy, and challenging. We work to critically evaluate the quality of services we provide and to identify opportunities for improvement.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale serves an extraordinarily diverse student population. For some, English is their second language. Some are physically challenged. Many attend part time. Many have families. Many have never been away from home before, having lived in the region all their lives. We are committed to offering and developing programs and services to help all students become active, successful participants on campus and ultimately to live as successful, broadly experienced leaders in the greater community.

The key goals of the Division are to: enhance services and programs for students, provide learning and development opportunities for staff, and build and renovate student service facilities. We oversee the programs and services offered at the Student Recreation Center and the Student Center, the Student Health Center, the Counseling Center, and Rainbow’s End Child Development Center. Achieving and expanding our goals through these and many other programs is a challenge that can only be met by increased commitment and continued support from private sources.

As part of the Opportunity Through Excellence Campaign for Southern, an unprecedented $100 million effort through the SIU Foundation, the Division seeks to raise $l.25 million for the following purposes:

Undergraduate Scholarships
$500,000

The Division is responsible for student recruitment and retention. Financial assistance is a major factor as competition for talented students increases. Offering merit- and need-based undergraduate scholarships raises the caliber of our student body, but financial assistance has not kept pace with the increases in tuition and associated college costs. In order to be competitive with peer institutions as we pursue promising young people, we are dedicated to increasing our ability to offer scholarships to new and continuing students.

Academic Excellence
$500,000

The Institute for Student Leadership and Community Service will promote civic involvement among students—involvement that will continue as a positive part of their lives long after they leave Southern. Students who are active as leaders and community servants while attending college have higher graduation rates and feel significantly more connected to the campus and community. Programs at the Institute will strive to encourage citizen-leaders with global perspectives.

Facilities and Technology
$250,000

The new Multi-Cultural/International Center will become a focal point for interaction and exchange among and between our diverse student groups. Our international population is one of the university’s strengths. The new Center will allow us to continue our successful history of diversity by providing space for informal gatherings as well as presentations of many types. Students will benefit from daily exposure to ideas from differing global perspectives. We are committed to celebrating and promoting our multi-cultural campus community, and the new Multi-Cultural/International Center will further this priority.
